Fall is here! The water is cooling daily on the Truckee and arguably the best time of the year for fly fishing is over the next couple of months. This would be a great time to make some plans to do some fishing in the Reno-Tahoe area for sure. Wet wading season is just about over so patch up your waders and get out on the water.
California
The flows have been shut down some coming out of Lake Tahoe. The stretch of river between Tahoe City down through Truckee is pretty low but fishable. You just have to find the bigger pools. Once you reach Boca Bridge the flows are pretty much what they have been for the last couple of months, perfect! There is still a really good crayfish bite and Nymphing with Dead Drift Cray's or even as a streamer has been working well. Fall is setting in so look for the fishing conditions to change. We should start to see more bugs including Baetis, October Caddis and a variety of Mayflies.
Nevada
The air temps. are still pretty warm in the Reno area. We are looking for a few days reaching 90 degrees this week. Overnight temps are down and the water is in great shape. The tubers are all but gone and we have the river back to ourselves. Most of the stockers are gone and we are back to fishing for almost all wild fish. There are still some Golden Stonefly husks around on streamside boulders and Nymphing with a Stonefly around a size 6-10 with a smaller dropper like a Juju Baetis has been working well. Fish are definitely chasing streamers more and more also.
Flows on the Truckee
Truckee 81 CFS, Boca Bridge 581 CFS, Farad 636 CFS, Mogul 455 CFS, Reno 487 CFS.
