Current Water Conditions

The main Truckee River is fishing well right now, thanks to the early spring-like conditions we’ve been experiencing. So far, runoff has been minimal, which has helped maintain good water clarity throughout much of the system. With unseasonably warm temperatures arriving earlier than usual, we’re already starting to see insect activity that typically doesn’t show up until later in the spring. The upper sections of the river are still running on the low side, while the lower stretches are seeing noticeably higher flows. These varying conditions are creating a range of opportunities depending on where you’re fishing. Current flows on the main Truckee river are Tahoe City area 49CFS, Glenshire 563 CFS, Boca Confluence 663CFS, and Farad area 822 CFS

Water Temperatures

Hovering around 50 degrees fahrenheit.

Hatches

With the warmer weather, we’re seeing early hatches of caddis and Pale Morning Duns—both of which usually don’t become consistent until later in the season. In addition, Blue Wing Olives and midges continue to hatch most afternoons. These hatches tend to be most productive on days with a bit of cloud cover, so keep an eye on the weather for your best shot at surface activity.

Effective Tactics

Nymphing remains the most reliable method for consistent action. Running an indicator setup with adequate split shot has been the go-to approach for many anglers. That said, there are definitely opportunities for quality dry fly fishing if you’re willing to hunt for it. Most of this action is happening in slower-moving water and larger pools where fish are keying in on surface insects.

Catch Report

Upwards of 4 to 5 fish per day. Mostly fish are being caught in the sections with higher flows.
