Our river fishing is going strong. Along the shores of the Colorado River, the striper bite has been excellent. Local anglers have been showing off some great catches from shore. Cari Fox and Steve Shurte were fishing near the casino area on the Arizona side using anchovies. They landed a couple of stripers—Cari’s measured 25 inches and weighed 6 pounds, while Steve’s was 16 3/8 inches at 1.7 pounds. This is great news, as smaller stripers are showing up and bait fishing with anchovies is producing results.
We’ve also received our final stocking of rainbow trout for the year from the Willow Beach Hatchery. Stocking will resume in the fall, so be sure to watch for the fishing clinic we host with the Moose Lodge in September.
Up on Lake Mohave, striper action continues, and both largemouth and smallmouth bass are nearing spawn and will soon be nesting. Personally, I’m not a fan of targeting bass while they’re guarding nests. During this time, males are protecting eggs and fry, and catching them can leave nests vulnerable. If you do hook one, please handle it carefully and release it quickly so it can return to the nest.
Back on the river, plenty of rainbow trout have been stocked and are spread throughout, so we’re looking forward to seeing anglers come in with limits of five trout—and maybe a few stripers as well.
Hope this helps for now. And remember, you can’t worry while fishing—now go catch a fish!
