The bonytail is native to the Colorado River system in southern Nevada, historically found in Lake Mead and the lower Colorado River. Listed as federally endangered since 1980, wild populations have been extirpated from most of Nevada's waters. The Nevada Department of Wildlife cooperates with federal agencies on recovery efforts, including monitoring stocked individuals in Lake Mead as part of the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program. Possession and take are prohibited under the Endangered Species Act.
