Nevada Fishing Regulations
2026 Nevada Fishing Regulations — freshwater only. All regulations applicable to CR 25-16.
Nevada Native Fish Slam
Anglers must catch one each of six native sport fish species and document the waterbody, date of capture, and a photo of each fish. Species required: Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Bonneville Cutthroat Trout, Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, Redband Trout, Bull Trout, and Mountain Whitefish. No weight or length measurements required. Fish must be taken legally from Nevada waters. All photos submitted become property of NDOW and may be used in NDOW publications. No time limit for completing the slam, but entry form must be submitted within 60 days of each catch. Upon completing all species, anglers receive a certificate and custom hat. In 2026, a new native trout medallion will be awarded to participants who complete the challenge. Anglers visiting eastern Nevada have the unique advantage of completing the entire slam within Elko and White Pine counties. Subsequent slams cannot begin until at least one month after the preceding slam is awarded; only a certificate (no hat) is awarded for additional slams.
Nevada Trophy Fish Program
Fish meeting minimum weight qualifications receive a Trophy Fish Certificate. Requirements: (1) Fish must be taken legally from Nevada waters. (2) Weight must be taken of whole fish before freezing. (3) Length measured from tip of nose to tip of tail. (4) Measurements must be witnessed by two other persons, at least one of whom must not be a relative of the angler. (5) Angler must provide positive identification of species and an adequate photograph. (6) Entry must be made within the calendar year of date caught to be included in that year's contest. (7) If the fish is a possible Nevada State Record, it must be weighed on a certified scale and witnessed by an NDOW employee. (8) Entry form must be submitted within 60 days of the fish being caught. To be considered for the Trophy Fish Book, all entries must be submitted by January 31. All photos and stories submitted may be used in NDOW publications.
Nevada Youth License Fund
Donation-driven program offering free youth combination (fishing/hunting) licenses to kids ages 12-17 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Over 15,000 free youth licenses issued since launch in 2023. Over 64% of youth who received a free license are first-time license holders. Funded entirely by donations from individuals, businesses, and partner organizations. Over 7,000 generous donors. Provides a full year of fishing and hunting at no cost to families.
Nevada Free Fishing Day 2026
On Nevada Free Fishing Day, any person may fish Nevada's waters without a fishing license. All other regulations (bag limits, seasons, gear restrictions, etc.) still apply.
FishNV Online Tool
Online web tool highlighting all Nevada's fishable waters. Filters by species, water type (lakes/reservoirs/streams), region, or county. Includes satellite and topographic basemaps. Layers include fishable waters, hunt units, and public land layers. Clicking on a water shows game species present, top trophy fish records, and any consumption advisories. Buy fishing license directly from the FishNV home page.
NDOW Daily Fishing Survey
Anglers are encouraged to complete a daily fishing survey to help biologists manage and improve Nevada's recreational fisheries. Quickly and accurately report catch information while information is fresh. Scan the QR code in the regulations booklet or visit ndow.org.
