The Warner Sucker is endemic to the Warner Basin in extreme northwestern Nevada and south-central Oregon. In Nevada, it inhabits streams and lakes within the Warner Valley drainage system. Listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1985, the species faces habitat degradation from water diversions and livestock grazing. The Nevada Department of Wildlife cooperates with federal agencies on recovery efforts. Fishing for this species is prohibited under ESA protections.
