The Amargosa Pupfish is native to Nevada's Amargosa River basin in Nye County, primarily inhabiting warm springs and their outflows in the Ash Meadows area near the California border. This federally endangered species is protected under the Endangered Species Act, with critical habitat designated at several spring systems including Crystal Spring and other Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge waters. The Nevada Department of Wildlife cooperates with USFWS on conservation efforts. Recreational fishing is prohibited.
