Body Type & Identification: The only viviparous (live-bearing) freshwater fish native to the West Coast of the US — gives birth to fully formed young. Deep-bodied, perch-like with a pattern of dark bars on a silver-olive body. Resembles Eastern surfperch but completely landlocked. Endemic to California — found only in the Sacramento-San Joaquin system and Clear Lake.
Preferred Water Temperature: 62°F–72°F. Found in slow rivers, sloughs, and lakes of the Sacramento Valley. Most common in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, Clear Lake, and Russian River. Associates with aquatic vegetation and submerged wood in slow water.
Habitat: Slow rivers, sloughs, lakes, and ponds of the Sacramento-San Joaquin drainage and Clear Lake, California. Very common in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta — one of the most abundant fish in Delta backwaters. Found near vegetation and tule (bulrush) stands — hence the name.
Best Lures: Small jigs near vegetation produce catches. Small inline spinners work well. Small soft plastics near bottom are effective.
Best Baits: Small worm pieces are the top bait. Small nightcrawler sections work well. Freshwater shrimp and grass shrimp are excellent. Light tackle with small hooks near vegetation in Delta sloughs and tule edges produces consistent catches — a fun, underrated panfish target.
