American Gizzard Shad
Dorosoma cepedianum
Dorosoma cepedianum
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Clupeiformes
Family: Clupeidae
Genus: Dorosoma
Species: D. cepedianum
Body Type & Identification: Silvery with a distinctive dark spot behind the gill cover and a thread-like extension of the last dorsal ray. Deep, laterally compressed body with a small, downturned mouth. A filter feeder that processes algae and organic particles through a gizzard-like stomach — hence the name. The most important forage fish in eastern US reservoirs.
Preferred Water Temperature: 65°F–82°F. A warm-water schooling species found in the open water of lakes, reservoirs, and large rivers throughout the eastern US. Forms enormous schools visible at the surface. The primary prey species for Largemouth Bass, Striped Bass, Walleye, and countless other predators in eastern reservoirs.
Habitat: Open water of lakes, reservoirs, and large rivers throughout the eastern US from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. An extremely abundant, schooling species that supports entire reservoir sport fisheries. Can overpopulate lakes when predator populations are insufficient to control them — contributing to poor water quality through algae stimulation.
Best Lures: Not a sport fishing target — primary value is as live bait.
Best Baits: Cast nets are used to collect Gizzard Shad for use as live bait. Fresh-dead Gizzard Shad are excellent cut bait for Catfish and Striped Bass — the oily flesh produces a strong scent trail. Large fresh-dead Shad fished on bottom rigs are outstanding Catfish bait throughout the eastern US.
Top 5 Destinations: Not a sport target — found throughout eastern US reservoirs as the foundational forage species.
