Rainbow/Cutthroat Hybrid Trout ()
Body Type & Identification: A hybrid between Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout — called "Cutbow." Displays characteristics of both parents: the pink lateral stripe of Rainbow Trout combined with the orange-red slash marks under the jaw of Cutthroat Trout. Can occur naturally where both species co-exist or be deliberately produced in hatcheries. Often difficult to distinguish from pure parent species.
Preferred Water Temperature: 52°F–65°F. A cold, clear-water trout adapted to mountain streams, rivers, and lakes. Same temperature requirements as both parent species — thrives in cold, well-oxygenated water.
Habitat: Mountain streams, rivers, and lakes of the western US where Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout ranges overlap — primarily the Rocky Mountain region. Also found in hatchery-stocked lakes and rivers. A naturally occurring hybrid in some western river systems.
Best Lures: Same techniques as for Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout. Small spinners produce consistent results. Dry flies and nymphs are outstanding on fly tackle. Small spoons and minnow lures work well.
Best Baits: Salmon eggs are the top bait in streams. Nightcrawlers produce excellent results. PowerBait works in lakes. Live small minnows catch fish in lakes. Same presentations as pure Rainbow or Cutthroat Trout are effective.
Top 5 Destinations: Found throughout the Rocky Mountain region wherever Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout ranges overlap — not specifically destination-fished.
