The Truckee is fishing really well for January. As usual, the Nevada side is easily the best. The flows are low due to the lack of storms and snowpack, but the river is in great shape. There is no anchor ice and access is great. You have to approach the river a little different than in the summer and fish are going to be in larger, deeper runs and pools. The available food in the river is sparse and small so using small flies will give you the best result. The water is cold, and the fish are lethargic. Getting good drifts either with an indicator or High Sticking is your best bet. There has been a light Baetis hatch on warmer days, especially with some cloud cover. Late morning to mid-afternoon is going to be the best time to fish. Nymphing with size 18 Baetis nymphs and midges is the way to go with a box of Baetis dries ready to go just in case. Flows are: Town of Truckee 84 CFS, boca Bridge 292 CFS, Farad 306 CFS, Reno 278 CFS and Vista 326 CFS.
