Blue winged olive hatches are happening almost every day and they can be thick every afternoon! It takes some clouds or shadows later in the day to make the fish rise to eat on the surface, but the food is plentiful. Smaller baetis and midges patterns are working well as the hatch is subsurface as well. We suggest that you vary your depths beneath your indicator or when using a euro nymphing as the fish may begin to suspend to better intercept the hatching insects.

The fish have been on midge too. Eddies and on soft seams is where you will find the trout feeding. It’s not uncommon to see a ton of BWO going off and think that the fish are eating those when on further investigation they are focused on a smaller sub-hatch of midge. One of our favorite midge patterns when they are eating on the surface is the Griffith Gnat.
