EAST WALKER RIVER

The weather is getting pretty warm up here these days, the water temps on the river are increasing as well.  The flows are down to about 65 cfs. As of yesterday the reports indicate that the fish are still happy and healthy and releasing strong, there hasn’t been much angler activity on the river lately but we think that if you get down there early and just fish until maybe around 11:00am or so, then maybe get in some dry action after the sun goes down you should be able to have a bit of fun and not be too much of a risk on the fish, at least maybe for the next week or so. If it keeps getting warmer it will probably be time to stay off the river all together and let those fish have a rest. The lower section below the bridge has been the best, plus the water down there generates a bit more oxygen than up above so the fish are happier, dry/dropper rigs have been doing the best with chubby chernobyl’s, hoppers and madam x’s on top and perdigons, zebras, pheasant tails and the like underneath. Use your best judgement when fishing down there, if the fish seem sluggish at all it’s time to get out so you don’t harm them, and if this is the case please let us know so we can put the word out.

SCEIRINE RANCH

The ranch is still fishing pretty well, with dry/dropper rigs also being the best way to go lately. As with the California side at some point in the next week or two it will likely be getting too warm to fish and we’ll let you know as soon as that’s the case.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR

Like some of the other waters in the area the Reservoir has heated up quite a bit this past week, this has seemed to slow down the trout fishing out there but the perch fishing is still hanging in there. There are still a few trout being caught with at least 1 rainbow making a showing at 7lb 15oz this week as well as a couple nice browns over 3 pounds being caught and released. Some boats are reporting up to 10 perch per day trolling small Rapalas and night crawlers.

KIRMAN LAKE

We didn’t hear any news from Kirman this week if we get any reports we’ll be sure to pass them along.

TWIN LAKES

The Twins are hanging in there with some nice rainbows up to around 5 pounds coming in this week, some anglers are struggling but others are doing well. Some of the successful anglers have been using pinched crawlers, inflated night crawlers, mice tails and garlic power bait, early in the morning and late in the evening you can try casting lures like Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters.

WEST WALKER RIVER

The West has been producing some fish for fly anglers fishing hoppers, ants and beetles on top as well as prince nymphs, copper johns and soft hackles on the bottom. The water is low and clear so you’ll want to be sneaky up there. It sounds like the best area to fish is in the canyon closer to the town of Walker.

VIRGINIA LAKES

The Virginias have had a few hit days as well as a few miss days this week, on the hit days they’ve had some success with pinched crawlers and mice tails while the lure anglers have been using mini jigs and Panther Martins. Fly anglers can have some success with sinking lines and mini leech or soft hackle patterns.

RANDOM INFORMATION:

I’ve started a change.org petition to try to encourage the Department of Fish and Wildlife to re-consider the East Walker River regulation changes they made a couple seasons ago. Most importantly they doubled the limit on the river and got rid of the barbless hook requirement which I believe in the long run will be extremely detrimental to the fishery as a whole. A lot of anglers still pinch their barbs and we encourage them to do so but there are still a lot of anglers who don’t take the time to do that. My petition proposes that they go all the way and make the East Walker River artificial flies or lures only, single barbles hooks, zero fish limit (catch and release only) and open all year long. If you would like to see the regs on the river change please go to https://chng.it/Jzv5JzSy and cast your vote. I’ve also shared the information on Ken’s Facebook page, feel free to vote and share as often as you like. If we get a bunch of signatures hopefully we can get the DFW to take a closer look at the regs for the EW and maybe make some changes.
