The Truckee has been fishing very well this week. This is such a great time to live in the area and have the opportunity to go fish the river on a whim, with few others around and plenty of fired up fish! With the fish holding in slow water right now, indicator fishing is the name of the game, focus on walking speed water or less. Worms, eggs, stones, baetis and midges are the flies of choice again this week, with the biggest emphasis on eggs and baetis.

We are finding a few fish on skwala nymphs on the CA side this week, and this will only get better in the coming weeks. We have yet to see any adults on top, but expect to see them soon. The skwala hatch can last for quite a while, so be sure to have a good selection of both the nymphs and adults if you plan on fishing the Truckee much this spring.

On the NV side, the name of the game is baetis. The dry fly fishing out here really picked up over the last two weeks, and this can be some of the best fishing on top that the Truckee provides. This method will get better and better as you head east, anywhere from Lockwood and down normally. While streamer fishing remains a bit hit-or-miss, it’s a fun way to cover water and hunt for that trophy. White and black are some good colors this time of year, but it’s also hard to go wrong with olive.

Fish mid-day through the evening this time of year, when water temps are on the rise. As a reminder, we do offer float trips on the lower river, which is currently fishing great and will likely just get better over the next few weeks. Give us a call to get out there with us!
