Its May and the fish are either in spawn mode or coming out of it. May is tough at the lake, the water is warming fast, the algae has been growing for some time and a large number of fish are just not eating. This is May at Pyramid Lake. This is the month that most of the other lakes and reservoirs in the West start to turn on. This is the month to do something else. If you have watched our videos over the past few years we will explain this situation in detail. Here is the video
If you’re going to the lake, then fish in the rocky areas with an indicator rig. Go on cloudy windy days and keep an eye on your flies for Gue and moss. Downsize your leader and tippet and flies on calm days. Size 16 midges on 4x tippet. Albino Wino’s, Copper Wino’s and G.T.’s are great choices for midges. These fish are picky. Early in the morning and late when the sun is off the water is your best time to strip. Use foam backed flies such as a Tadpole or Beetle to try to keep away from the moss. Strip slowly and allow the foam to float the fly a little.
