After yet another cold snap last week, we are seeing things warm back up to typical spring temps just in time for the weekend. The local creeks are slowly dropping as runoff from the mountains wanes, and the Truckee is slowly but steadily dropping upstream of the Boca confluence. Below this however, things are still running high due to releases from the Little Truckee. While most of the river still continues to fish well, depending on what section you end up at, the experience may be quite different. We are fans of big water, it pushes fish into predictable areas, hides our presence, and triggers aggressive feeding by the trout among other things. While 1,200 CFS sounds big, this is still very much fishable and is what some of us may actually prefer. At these flows the big things will be covering water to find those soft pockets, using a whole lot of split shot on larger flies (or the heaviest euro nymph you’ve got), and using heavier tippet to help turn bigger fish attempting to head downstream in the heavy current. We understand that this may not be everyone’s idea of a fun day of fishing, but it sure is exciting! If you’re after the more traditional fly fishing experience, you may look to stay above the Boca confluence where flows are less than half. As of today we are seeing 500 CFS around Glenshire, which has dropped over 150 CFS in the last week as the number of creeks upstream begin to fizzle out. These are nearly ideal flows for Glenshire; enough for you to move around easily, as well as enough to keep the fish in their typical lies. Look to find fish in some faster water here than you may find downstream. There are also good odds of seeing some noses at this point with a number of different bugs present. PMDs, BWOs, carpenter ants, a few caddis and even a few green drakes have kept the fish looking at a variety of bugs right now, allowing anglers to fish a variety of patterns. Things such as blowtorches, duracells, peaches and cream, Pat’s rubberlegs and crawdad patterns are a few of the heavy hitters this week, with most sizes working well as the fish aren’t too selective with so many bugs present. While getting a fish to rise on the Truckee may not always be the easiest, one thing to consider would be to try fishing a “sunken ant” pattern on your typical nymph rig. Give it a try this week, we don’t think you’ll be disappointed! As we continue to see some cooler mornings right now, the fishing does continue to still be a bit better leading into midday through the afternoon, so while we may be open at 7am now, don’t think you have to get out early to get the best fishing. That said, if the morning is your time to get out there, we are now in our summer hours, so stop in and say hi before you hit the water!
