The East Walker River is a premier Western tailwater trout fishery that begins below Bridgeport Reservoir and flows into Nevada. Known for its trophy-sized brown and rainbow trout, the East Walker offers fly anglers consistent, technical, and highly rewarding fishing throughout much of the year.

In California, the stretch immediately below the dam is tightly managed with special regulations and provides some of the best year-round fly fishing in the Sierra. Cold releases from Bridgeport Reservoir support prolific insect life, including midges, baetis, caddis, and stoneflies. Early season tactics rely heavily on indicator nymphing with small flies like zebra midges and WD-40s. As flows stabilize in summer, terrestrial patterns and dry-dropper rigs become effective.

The river’s Nevada section offers larger water, with a mix of riffles, bends, and long runs. This stretch, especially at the Sceirine Ranch, is often booked by guided anglers for its access to fewer but larger trout. Streamer fishing is a common approach here, particularly for aggressive browns in fall or during high-flow periods.

Flow rate is a key variable—optimal fishing occurs between 80 and 250 cfs. Low flows in late summer can stress fish, making careful handling essential. Winter and early spring provide some of the best action, especially when regional rivers are closed or iced over.

The East Walker’s combination of big fish, technical water, and year-round access makes it a top-tier fishery in the West. It rewards skilled fly anglers who can adapt their approach and offers one of the best chances in California or Nevada to land a trophy trout on a fly.
