Dead Horse Ranch State Park
Spot Information
| Fish Species: | Channel Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass |
Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ, offers well-managed, year-round fishing across three scenic lagoon ponds stocked with rainbow trout, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish. These lagoons are shallow, easily accessible, and ideal for beginner and intermediate anglers.
From late fall through early spring, the Arizona Game and Fish Department stocks rainbow trout weekly. These fish are best targeted using PowerBait, worms, or small inline spinners. Fly anglers often succeed with woolly buggers and midges, particularly during early morning hatches.
As temperatures rise, warmwater species become more active. Largemouth bass feed near structure and respond to soft plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Channel catfish are stocked for summer angling and bite well on cut bait, liver, and dough baits in the evening.
Bluegill and green sunfish are abundant and provide constant action near the shoreline, especially on worms or micro jigs.
Barrier-free shoreline access, paved trails, and fishing platforms make the lagoons extremely user-friendly. Non-motorized boats are permitted. The state park offers full camping amenities, restrooms, showers, and picnic areas, making it a family-friendly destination with scenic surroundings.
The park’s central location in the Verde Valley adds further appeal, making it one of central Arizona’s best options for convenient, productive, and enjoyable freshwater fishing
