Highland Lakes - Lake Alpine, CA

Spot Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout
Highland Lakes, nestled in a stunning high alpine valley near the top of Ebbetts Pass, sits at an elevation of 8,600 feet. These two lakes are unique because they serve as headwaters for two separate watersheds: the eastern lake feeds into the Mokelumne River, while the western lake flows into the Stanislaus River. Both lakes have a 5 mph boat speed limit, and gas-powered motors are discouraged to preserve the serene environment. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and horseback riding.

There are no garbage services, so visitors are required to pack in and pack out all their trash. The area is home to three trailheads: the Garder Meadow Trailhead, just above the upper lake; the Highland Creek Trailhead, located at the lower lake; and the Tryon Meadow Trailhead, about a mile north of the lakes. All these trails lead into the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.

To get there, take Highland Lakes Road, a steep and winding dirt route that’s about five miles off Highway 4. The road is narrow, and safe travel speeds are typically 20 mph or less. While the lakes offer no restrooms or potable water, the area provides ample opportunities for fishing, hunting, hiking, and winter sports, making it a perfect getaway for outdoor enthusiasts.
