Virginia Lake - Reno, NV

Spot Information

Fish Species: Channel Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, Common Carp, Cutbow Trout
Virginia Lake, situated centrally within Reno, Nevada, constitutes a highly accessible and actively managed urban community fishery. This impoundment is a cornerstone of the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) urban fishing program, providing consistent angling opportunities for diverse populations. The primary target species are Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), subject to extensive, regular stocking, alongside robust populations of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and opportunistic catches of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) and Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Angling methodologies are comprehensive and efficacious across species. For Rainbow Trout, conventional bait presentations utilizing PowerBait or natural baits, and spin casting with diminutive artificial lures (spinners, spoons), yield consistent results. Channel Catfish are predominantly targeted by bottom-fishing with prepared or natural baits, particularly during crepuscular and nocturnal hours in warmer months. Bass species respond to soft plastic presentations and crankbaits near structural elements. Fly fishing with small nymph or streamer patterns is also productive. Optimal fishing periods are perennially available, contingent upon species-specific thermal preferences and stocking schedules. Winter ice fishing is popular when conditions permit. Access is highly developed, featuring ample paved parking, comprehensive walking paths, and numerous designated shoreline access points within Virginia Lake Park. Anglers are unequivocally mandated to consult current NDOW regulations concerning specific bag limits and any area-specific provisions, crucial for the sustained management of this vital metropolitan fishery.
