Donner Lake, situated at 6,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada near Truckee, CA, is a glacial alpine lake that offers a scenic and often overlooked stillwater fly fishing experience. While more famous for its historical context and summer recreation, Donner is home to rainbow trout, brown trout, mackinaw (lake trout), and kokanee salmon. It’s not known for prolific numbers, but it consistently produces quality fish and a rewarding technical challenge for fly anglers.
Because of its deep, clear waters and steep shoreline, fly fishing from a boat or float tube is highly recommended. Shoreline opportunities do exist, especially during spring and fall when trout cruise shallows, but much of the productive water lies just out of casting range.
Spring is prime time, particularly around snowmelt when rainbows and browns move into the shallows. Streamer fishing along drop-offs and rocky points is highly effective, with olive or black woolly buggers, sculpin patterns, and perch imitations being productive. During calm mornings, dry fly fishing can be effective in the west end coves where midges and callibaetis emerge.
As summer progresses, trout move deeper, and sink-tip or full-sink lines become essential. Mornings and evenings are most productive. In fall, brown trout migrate near creek mouths to spawn, offering anglers a chance at trophy-sized fish using streamers.
Donner can be a humbling fishery, requiring patience and strategy, but the clear water, large trout, and dramatic scenery make the effort worthwhile. It’s ideal for anglers seeking a high-elevation technical lake challenge with big-fish potential and year-round fishing options (including winter midge fishing from shore).
