Tempe Town Lake offers a dynamic blend of urban convenience and productive angling, right in the center of downtown Tempe. This 224-acre reservoir, part of the Community Fishing Program, supports both stocked and wild fish species and provides easy access for anglers of all experience levels.
During winter, the lake is stocked with rainbow trout, while summer brings catfish, sunfish, and bass into the mix. Shoreline access is excellent, with paved paths, docks, and ADA-accessible piers scattered throughout the waterfront. Kayaks and small electric boats are welcome, and boat rentals are available on-site.
Fishing for trout is best with PowerBait or salmon eggs in the cooler months. Largemouth bass can be taken on soft plastics or spinnerbaits near submerged structure, particularly in spring. Catfish respond well to chicken liver and cut bait in the warmer months.
As part of the Community Fishing Program, anglers 10 and older need a special license. Daily limits are regulated, including 4 catfish, 2 trout, 10 sunfish, and 1 bass over 13 inches.
Tempe Town Lake excels as an accessible fishery where residents and visitors alike can cast a line in a clean, well-maintained urban setting. It’s an ideal stop for casual fishing, family outings, or fitting in a few casts after work.
