Willow Springs Lake, just east of Payson near the Mogollon Rim, is one of Arizona’s top high-country trout fisheries. Covering 150 acres at over 7,600 feet elevation, this cool, scenic lake offers excellent access and consistent fishing throughout the warm seasons.
The lake is heavily stocked with rainbow trout from spring through fall, while brown trout are also present, with some growing to trophy size. Fishing is productive from both the bank and boats, with PowerBait, salmon eggs, and worms being top bait choices. Spinners and flies also produce, especially during early mornings and hatch events. Fly anglers often target trout near the inlets or drop-offs using nymphs or dry flies.
A paved boat ramp, picnic areas, and vault toilets make Willow Springs an ideal destination for day trips or weekend getaways. Only electric motors are allowed, and float tubes, kayaks, and small boats are common. Crayfish are abundant and may be caught by hand or trap.
This lake stays cool enough for trout fishing all summer, and occasional winter ice fishing is possible. An Arizona fishing license is required, and standard trout bag limits apply.
Willow Springs Lake consistently provides quality trout fishing in a peaceful, forested environment. It’s a favorite among families, campers, and fly fishers seeking dependable action in the pines.
