Tuolumne River - North Fork - Tuolumne County, CA

Spot Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout

The North Fork Tuolumne River is generally managed under California’s general trout regulations, with a season running from the last Saturday in April through November 15. Some sections may be subject to special rules, so checking current CDFW regulations is important.

For anglers seeking solitude, physical challenge, and classic backcountry trout water, the North Fork Tuolumne delivers in spades.

The North Fork of the Tuolumne River is a remote, high-gradient tributary in Tuolumne County, offering rugged terrain, scenic beauty, and a rewarding wild trout fishery. This freestone stream supports healthy populations of rainbow trout and occasional browns, with fish ranging from 6 to 12 inches and sometimes larger in deep pools.

Best fished from late spring through early fall, the North Fork offers excellent dry fly opportunities during summer hatches. Fly anglers find success with caddis, mayflies, and terrestrials, while subsurface tactics using beadhead nymphs or woolly buggers work in faster water and deeper runs. Spin fishing is productive using ultralight gear and small spinners.

Access is challenging but rewarding, with anglers hiking in from forest roads and trails. Popular access points include areas near Cottonwood Road and Long Barn, though much of the river remains wild and rarely fished. The stream’s clarity and low fishing pressure make stealth and proper presentation essential.

Managed largely under general trout regulations, the North Fork is open from late April through mid-November. This is a true backcountry fishery ideal for skilled, self-sufficient anglers seeking seclusion and quality wild trout action in a classic Sierra Nevada setting.
