River Walk Lakes - Kern County, CA
Spot Information
| Fish Species: | Rainbow Trout, Lightning Trout |
The River Walk Lakes in Bakersfield offer a convenient, family-friendly fishing experience in an urban park setting. Comprising two small ponds surrounded by walking paths and public gathering areas, these lakes are stocked seasonally with rainbow trout and catfish, and support populations of bluegill and the occasional bass.
Due to their urban setting, fishing pressure is moderate to high, particularly after trout or catfish stockings. The park is ideal for short trips, family outings, or teaching new anglers the basics in a peaceful, clean setting.
No boating is allowed, and the lakes are managed for shore fishing only. Amenities include restrooms, a walking path, benches, and ample parking.
From November through March, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks rainbow trout on a regular schedule. Anglers use PowerBait, salmon eggs, and small lures to target these trout, particularly within the first few days of each plant. Trout are typically caught near shore, around aerators, or in open water zones.
During warmer months, bluegill become the primary target and provide steady action using worms or small jigs under a float. Catfish are stocked periodically in the summer and are caught using cut bait or chicken liver fished on the bottom in the early morning or evening.
The lakes are accessible by foot and designed for shore fishing only. Amenities include paved trails, benches, and restrooms, making it a great option for families or beginners. Though small, River Walk Lakes provide consistent urban angling with seasonal variety in a clean and scenic environment.
