Mammoth Lakes - Mammoth, CA

Spot Information

Fish Species:
Mammoth Lakes, located at over 8,000 feet in California’s Eastern Sierra, comprises a series of alpine lakes that offer outstanding trout fishing in a pristine mountain setting. Lakes Mary, George, Mamie, Horseshoe, and Twin Lakes each support populations of rainbow, brown, brook, and occasionally golden trout. The region is routinely stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and provides opportunities for both shore and boat anglers.

Lake Mary is the largest and most popular, offering full marina services, rentals, and strong rainbow trout action using PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and trolling rigs. Lake George, the highest lake in the basin, is known for its scenic setting and is ideal for fly fishing from float tubes. Twin Lakes is particularly productive for brown trout, especially during the fall spawn.

The basin includes family-friendly lakes like Mamie and technical catch-and-release fisheries like Horseshoe. Access is straightforward via Lake Mary Road and shuttle services in summer. Fishing is best from late April through July and again in early fall. Anglers should review specific lake regulations, but most follow standard Eastern Sierra trout rules.

With accessible waters, a variety of species, and a well-developed infrastructure, Mammoth Lakes remains a premier destination for high-country trout anglers.
