Lake Isabella - Lake Isabella, CA

Spot Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Lightning Trout
Lake Isabella, one of the largest reservoirs in Southern California, offers anglers a diverse year-round fishery for bass, catfish, crappie, and stocked trout. Located near Kernville at the gateway to the southern Sierra, the lake spans over 11,000 surface acres and supports high catch rates across a variety of species.

Spring is peak time for bass and crappie. Largemouth and smallmouth bass spawn in shallow coves and rocky ledges, responding well to soft plastics, jigs, and crankbaits. Crappie fishing is especially strong near submerged brush and docks, with small jigs and live minnows producing best.

Lake Isabella is particularly famous for its catfish, including trophy-sized flatheads and abundant channel cats. Night fishing with cut bait or chicken liver is productive, especially in coves and creek channels.

Trout are stocked in fall and winter, with productive trolling near the dam and shoreline fishing using PowerBait. Boaters have access to multiple ramps and marinas, while shoreline anglers can fish at Paradise Cove, Boulder Gulch, and auxiliary dam zones.

Open year-round, the lake’s size, structure, and species diversity make it one of California’s top inland destinations for anglers of all skill levels. Water levels fluctuate, so conditions should be checked in advance.
