Lee Vining Creek - Lee Vining, CA
Spot Information
| Fish Species: | Rainbow Trout |
Lee Vining Creek is a classic Eastern Sierra freestone stream flowing from Tioga Pass into Mono Lake. It supports both wild and stocked rainbow and brown trout, offering fly anglers a combination of mountain pocket water and lower meadow-style fishing. Trout typically range from 8–14 inches, though larger fish are possible near deeper pools and structure.
Fishing is best from late spring through early fall, with dry-dropper setups highly effective during early summer. Attractor dries like stimulators and elk hair caddis, paired with beadhead nymphs such as pheasant tails or copper johns, are productive in the riffles and pockets above Lee Vining. Terrestrial patterns (ants, beetles, hoppers) work well in mid to late summer, particularly in the meadow sections downstream of the town.
The creek becomes less productive near its terminus at Mono Lake due to warmer water, so upstream reaches near the power station or Highway 120 are preferred. Small streamers can also be effective in deeper runs, particularly in the early morning or evening.
Access is easy via multiple pull-offs along Highway 395 and Highway 120, making Lee Vining Creek an ideal destination for quick sessions or longer exploratory days. It’s also a perfect complement to a Yosemite or Eastern Sierra road trip.
For fly anglers seeking classic Sierra freestone water in a scenic, accessible setting, Lee Vining Creek delivers solid fishing and high country charm.
