Blue Catfish
Ictalurus furcatus
Ictalurus furcatus
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Siluriformes
Family: Ictaluridae
Genus: Ictalurus
Species: I. furcatus
Body Type & Identification: Pale blue-gray to silver body with a deeply forked tail — similar to Channel Catfish but uniformly colored (no spots). A straight-edged anal fin with 30–36 rays distinguishes it from Channel Catfish. The largest catfish in North America — a true freshwater giant.
Preferred Water Temperature: 70°F–84°F. A river species that follows current and migrates seasonally. Most active in moving water — concentrates below dams, in deep river bends, and in channel edges where current breaks. Active year-round in large rivers.
Habitat: Large rivers and reservoirs of the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Rio Grande drainages. Prefer large rivers with strong current, deep holes, and abundant shad populations. Introduced into many Eastern reservoirs (James River, Kerr Lake) where they have thrived and produced trophy fish.
Best Lures: Rarely taken on artificial lures. Heavy bottom rigs are the standard approach.
Best Baits: Fresh-cut shad are the top bait for large Blue Catfish — skip-jack herring and gizzard shad are preferred. Fresh whole skipjack herring produce trophy fish. Live large shad are outstanding. Cut carp produces excellent results. Large whole sunfish and bluegill attract trophy fish. Heavy tackle (50–80 lb line) is needed for large fish. Drift fishing with cut shad along river channels is the top technique for trophy fish in large rivers.
Top 5 Destinations: James River VA, Kerr Lake NC/VA, Mississippi River, Missouri River, Red River ND/MN.
