Trout numbers have stayed stable this year, and fishing should be good throughout the river. Fishing during the spring months can be very good. Spinners, jigs or crankbaits can be used to target trout. Blue Fox, Panther Martin and Mepps are good spinner choices. Gold, silver, yellow and black are typically the most effective colors. If you’re fly fishing, small nymphs of midges, sow bugs, caddisflies and mayflies work well. Streamers in various colors are also a good bet. Black, brown, olive and olive/white are particularly productive colors. Higher river flows during runoff will move fish into slower water near the banks. Where regulations allow, nightcrawlers can be great at this time of year. Large and dark-colored streamers or artificial baits can also be used. Please remember: The stretch from the Card Canyon Bridge upstream to the highway bridge at the Red Banks campground is flies and lures only. Bait may be used from the highway at the Red Banks campground to the Idaho state line, but this stretch of river is currently closed to fishing. It will reopen at 6 a.m. on the second Saturday in July.
