Fish Reports

The new boat ramp should be useable now thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the Ely area and the contractor.  Surface water temperatures are in the mid 40’s.  Fishing has been slow for bass but good for 14 to 17-inch trout.   Anglers will catch trout on nightcrawlers, spinners, nymphs and wooly buggers. Chironomid patterns under an indicator are effective here this time

Fishing has been good following recent trout plants. The fish are taking a variety of PowerBait offerings, spinners, and small spoons. Overnight temperatures have dropped below freezing.

Rainbow trout action has been excellent. Still, the best action has been found by those using boats or floatables to get out from the shoreline. With water levels still on the low side, anglers find the best action off the dam. The fish are taking PowerBait in rainbow, orange, or green colors, as well as Rooster Tails and other spinners. Shore anglers are catching limits of rainbow trout following recent fish plants. Rooster Tails and garlic flavored PowerBait are producing nice catches. Worms are also working well for trout but could land a catfish too. Reports of striped bass hitting jig heads with worms are coming in from Davis Dam. Swimbaits and crankbaits in shad or trout patterns are also good choices for stripers.

Rainbow trout action has been steady at Willow Beach. Worms and different combinations of PowerBait are producing catches between 1 and 2 pounds. Anglers are reporting striper boils throughout the morning near Cottonwood Cove. The fish are attacking Zara Spooks and other topwater lures, crankbaits, and swimbaits. Water levels will be low through the winter as in past years.

Anglers had a good weekend fishing for catfish and bluegill. Catfish were taking night crawlers and hot dog pieces. Bass have been seen chasing Texas rigs at Floyd Lamb. Most fish action has been in the late morning or at sunset.  

Stripers are still boiling throughout the Boulder Basin. Anglers are reporting more consistent action a few hours before sunset. Live shad is the bait of choice, but topwater lures are landing nice catches too. Black bass are most active in the morning in the back of coves with heavy vegetation. Successful anglers have reported using Rat-L-traps from shore where large rocks or vegetation offer cover

At the downtown Reno gage the river is just over 500 cfs after peaking over 5,000 cfs at the downtown gage during last weekends historic storm.
