Fish Reports

Anglers are catching mostly rainbows in the 10- to 12-inch range with a few browns thrown in. A variety of traditional trout baits are catching the fish. Fly fishermen are doing really well using Woolly Buggers in olive or brown colors. Largemouth bass are still taking rubber worms in orange-brown or dark purple. The lower campground is open.

Anglers are finding good fishing for stocked rainbows and making the best of low fishing pressure. The fish are taking flies, PowerBait and night crawlers.

Catfish roaming the Community Park or Sunshine Peninsula areas are still taking anchovies and various baits. One lucky angler reeled in an 11.48-pound fish. Anchovies and pencil poppers have been enticing stripers. Most are holding in the current. The Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery is scheduled to plant trout next week, but anglers using night crawlers are still reportedly bringing in fish

While the striper bite has been light, one lucky angler did reel in a 28-pound striped bass on an AC Plug. Anglers also have caught a few stripers in the double-digit range while fishing out of Willow Beach near mile marker 52. Cold Creek Pond was planted last week. Traditionally the best bait at the start of trout season is rainbow or orange PowerBait or a salmon egg-mini marshmallow combo. Small hooks and small weights usually work best. Please use single barbless hooks if you plan to catch and release.

For the past week it seems fishing has been for the birds... and that is how many anglers have been locating their fishing holes. The birds are honing in on schools of gizzard and threadfin that have moved into the coves, shallows and throughout Vegas Wash. NDOW planted brown trout last week and anglers are having good success using PowerBait in various colors, small spinning lures or flies.

NDOW planted the reservoir with rainbow trout last week. The fish are taking most baits, including small lures, flies and PowerBait.

Trout anglers have found good action while fishing with night crawlers or cut anchovies. The anchovies have fooled striped bass as well. While most stripers are in the one to three-pound range, there are reports of anglers catching fish up to eight-pounds. With high winds bringing in a cold front the fish should begin feeding a little heavier.
