Wickiup Reservoir, near La Pine, Oregon, on the Deschutes River, is a massive and dynamic impoundment celebrated for its exceptional trout and kokanee salmon fishing. This Central Oregon giant is particularly renowned for its trophy-sized brown trout, which can exceed eight pounds, along with robust rainbow trout populations and abundant kokanee salmon.

Fishing conditions are generally excellent, with the reservoir often near full capacity and good access available. Early season offers superb leeching, while later, Callibaetis hatches provide prime dry fly opportunities. For brown trout, stripping large streamers on fast-sinking lines is a highly physical and effective method. Kokanee are readily caught by trolling. Nymphing with chironomids under an indicator is also consistently productive.

Due to its vast size, a boat or float tube is highly recommended for effectively covering water. Access is generally good via the Cascade Lakes Highway, with multiple boat ramps available. Conservation is paramount; anglers must strictly adhere to all Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) regulations, including bag limits and careful fish handling, to preserve this premier trophy fishery. Wickiup Reservoir offers an unparalleled and adventurous angling experience amidst a stunning Central Oregon landscape.
