Englebright Reservoir - Smartsville, CA

Englebright Reservoir is a narrow, canyon-style impoundment on the Yuba River, located near Smartsville in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Covering 815 acres, the lake is best known for its population of landlocked striped bass, rainbow trout, and spotted bass. Its depth and consistently cool water make it a year-round fishery with unique coldwater and warmwater overlap.

Landlocked striped bass are the primary attraction for many anglers, with fish exceeding 20 pounds caught each season. Spring and fall are peak times, especially when water temperatures align with baitfish activity. Anglers target stripers using swimbaits, live shad, and trolled plugs near channel drop-offs and submerged points.

Rainbow trout are stocked periodically and are most active in the cooler months, particularly near the Narrows and dam. Trolling with spoons or dodger setups and still-fishing with PowerBait from accessible points are productive methods.

Spotted and largemouth bass provide consistent warmwater action, particularly in spring and fall, when they move into coves and around rocky structure. Catfish are available in deeper, quieter pockets and respond well to night fishing with cut bait or liver.
