The Crooked continues to be one of the most dependable tailwaters in Central Oregon, with steady releases keeping water temperatures favorable and the fishing active. This is a great time of year to slow down, fish methodically, and let each run develop before moving on.
Afternoon insect activity has remained consistent, with PMDs and caddis sharing the spotlight through much of the day. Surface feeding has been steady rewarding anglers who watch for subtle rises and adjust to the insects they see instead of committing to a single pattern.
Subsurface fishing continues to account for the majority of hookups. Scuds, Zebra Midges, Olive Perdigons, Two Bit Hookers, Pheasant Tails, and small caddis pupa have all been producing fish when drifted naturally through transition water and deeper buckets. Anglers should also remember that bull trout are occasionally encountered below Bowman Dam and must be released immediately if caught & report the catch to crookedbulltrout@fws.gov.
