Hello fellow anglers.

First of all, after much thought. I must disagree on my daylight savings time comment in my last report. Yes a hour ;later in the winter months is convenient. But I recall a time in my youth, that California tried that one year. I personally hated walking to school in the dark. And to top it of, the state recognized the decision and reversed it within a month or two because of that. I would rather have standard time all year.

Reason is, When your outside doing your chores or visiting friends or fishing. You get home at 8pm and its dark by 9pm. So much for preparing that nice meal you had planned all day. Plus the extra hour of darkness each evening, would give more indoor family time before you hit the hay. Just my opinion. And I know that as an anglers, we can all adapt to standard time all year long. Its also more time around a campfire together.

Now speaking of campfires. It is illegal to have a campfire outside of a designated campground. Plus when your outside doing things that may start a spark. By law, you must have a cleared area and either a water source or a fire extinguisher on site.

I have been dealing with my son over in Valley Springs Ca with the Gann fire. He was right on the verge of being evacuated. Luckily for him and the town of Valley Springs. The winds shifted eastward. But not so good for the people that live in that area. It was started by a person cutting wood with a chainsaw and surrounded by cheat grass. Yes it was an accident and I know the person feels terrible about what happened. But we all need to do our part to keep our states from burning. Many people do not know that even smoking a cigarette, you have to be in an enclosed vehicle in our wilderness areas.

With all of this warming trend, not many anglers have been able to get out and fish much. But a few of us diehards have been out a few times here and there. Here is a small basic report for this week.

LAKE TAHOE:

The fishing has been slow. Most anglers have been going deep with downriggers using n F9 Rapala or a dodger followed by a live minnow. Best areas have been Dollar Point, the Tahoe Shelf or along the Camp Richardson area in the rocky areas. For more information go to Rubyjeancharters.com.

CAPLES LAKE:

This is the place to be with all of this heat in the valleys. The temps are usually 10 degrees cooler up there. The mackinaw action has slowed down a little with only a couple coming in lately. The rainbow action has been good from the shore by Woods Creek outlet or off the dam. Trollers have been using Rapalas or flashers and a threaded nightcrawler. The lake was recently planted with catchable rainbow trout The lake level has dropped , so be cautious over by purgatory cove. There are boat eating rock right at the entrance. Also a reminder that there is not water skiing allowed on the lake. The whole lake has a speed limit of 15 mph The resort is open for launching, boat rentals, cabin rentals and if you have never had dinner at their restaurant. You are missing out. WOODS LAKE:

The lake offers basic camping sites through the US Forest Service. The fishing has been fair for small rainbows. But perfect size for a nice meal at your campsite. Most anglers have been using nightcrawlers or flies in the evening.

RED LAKE:

The fishing has been slow to fair. Best times have been early morning to afternoon. The lake has rainbow and brook trout. No motorized boats on the lake. Perfect for a canoe or a float tube. If you do go out on the lake, take a small gold Kastmaster and do some still fishing by jigging it right off the bottom.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR:

I have not and probably will not be fishing the lake until later in the year. There are plenty of nice rainbows in the lake. But with the weeds along the shoreline. Its hard getting out to clean water.

WEST CARSON RIVER ALPINE COUNTY:

The river was planted recently with catchable rainbows. The fishing has been fair for early morning anglers. Drifting a half a night crawler under the under cuts out in the valley has been productive. Or finding those deeper holes in Woodfords canyon.

CARSON RIVER DOUGLAS COUNTY:

I attempted to fish above the broken dam but the water level was low and the water temp was high.

EAST FORK CARSON RIVER ALPNE COUNTY:

The fishing has been slow and the water level has dropped, but fishing has been productive. The CDFW planted the river recently with catchable rainbows. But now hold on to your poles. There are still a lot of those bigger fish that the county planted earlier this year. Drifting a half a night crawler with a small split shot has proven to be successful. The Carson River resort is open for tent camping, cabin rentals and they have full hookups for RV's. With a fully stocked general store for all the things you may have forgotten to bring. TOPAZ LAKE:

I braved the heat and left my boat at home. I fished the shore a few places and the fishing was slow, but productive. I caught a 2lb rainbow and a 1lb rainbow using rainbow Powerbait. I fished from 7am until noon when I ran out of shade on the south end of the lake. I talked with a couple trollers that said they had only had a few hits and a few small rainbows. This time of year, you need to get there early and fish in deeper waters. Now if you want to have fun with some smallmouth bass. Use a small spinner on the west side of the lake right off the shore. I also noted that the lake has dropped about 4 to 5 feet.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR:

Fishing has been slow for trollers. Some action has come in with anglers pulling a night treaded night crawler. No action with Rapalas. Most have been bait fishing by Robinson Creek and Buckeye Creek or off of rainbow point and doing fair. It may be a cooler down there. but the fish still feel the heat. The lake is not that deep and those fish are holding the bottom. The marina is open with tent and RV camping. They also have a couple nice army tent setups that I have stayed in a few times. BLUE LAKES:

The CDFW has recently planted catchable rainbow trout in both the upper and lower lakes. The fishing has been good to fair. Most have been using Powerbait or inflated nightcrawlers. Early morning risers have done well with various flies. The campground area is open on a first come first serve basis.

LAKE LAHONTAN:

I would recommend getting out there early and either have a canopy on your boat or find a shade tree. It gets HOT out there. But the fishing has been good. A fellow angler and a friend of mine fished out there last week and caught 7 walleye, 7 crappie, 5 white bass,3 yellow perch and on 32 inch long channel catfish. Now not to be out done by his better half, his wife caught and released a nice 20 inch walleye. There is a wide variety of fish in the lake for every taste in fishing. You just need to deal with a little heat.

ALPINE COUNTY RECENT FISH PLANTS:

Kirkwood Lake, Silver Creek, east and west Carson rivers, Caples Lake, upper and lower Blue Lakes.
