Mackinaw fishing is quite good. Guide Mike Nielsen is returning with pre-breakfast limits. Trolling plugs from 60 to 250 feet get macks in the three to seven pound class. Recreational boaters have made it tough on anglers. Runoff in the south end has made it muddy. Trout bite has been slow. Smallmouth bite has picked up on the east side and the north shore.  (775) 266-3550

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

Wind, snow have hampered efforts of late. An 11.4 brown was caught Friday by guide Mike Nielsen. Otherwise the catch usually is  two to four pound browns, but not many. One minute it’s snowing and the next the sun is out so the bite has been fickle. Guide Mike Nielsen is catching browns from the morning to mid-day. Fishing has been either very good or not good at all. Last week, Marvin Childs of Granite Bay caught a 15-pound, 15-ounce brown while trolling the shallows with guide Mike Nielson. Most of the attention was focused on the lakes south of here. Those who did fish last weekend caught limits on trolled Rapalas in the south end. Nightcrawlers/flashers also produce trout.

Tahoe sees a record brown

Although Lake Tahoe is known mainly for its large mackinaw [lake] trout caught in very deep water, the occasional oversize brown trout is fooled by skilled anglers. A new lake record for the species was caught this week, when angler Marvin Child nailed a 36-inch, 15 pound, 15 ounce brown while using a silver/black F11 Rapala Floater doused with Pautzke's Krill scent. This lake has been open since January and fishing well when the wind isn’t whipping. Gusts reached 65 mph earlier in the week but calm is expected Saturday. The southwest side has been fishing best with a good number of trout from 1-1/2 to two pounds being caught on nightcrawlers.

Trollers with nightcrawlers go to the south end and get some limits, some trout close to three pounds. Rate it a bit better than good. The water is cold (38 to 42 degrees) and the runoff is just starting. (775) 266-3550

Week 14 Topaz Derby 2011

This last week was excellent fishing at Topaz. The sun was shining and the fish were biting. We had anglers in everyday and a lot of them caught their limit. First place is Dusty McDonald of Topaz weighing 5.14 lbs and 23". Biggest fish so far this derby. Second place goes to Eva Bell of Yerington weighing in at 4.5

Topaz Lodge Derby Wk 13 2011

Biggest fish in week 13 weighed in at 4.8 and 21  ? " caught by John Hayes. Steve Nielsen won second prize with a 3.10 lb and 22". This last week brought in about 26 trout weighing at least 2lbs. Out of the 26 fish we only had 4 fish that weighed under 2.2 lbs. The trout are getting bigger.
