Elko County Fish Reports

Ready Soon for Ice Fishing

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
As of Thursday, December 10, the lake is 100% ice covered with a few inches of unsafe ice. It was snowing on Thursday, so there will be a layer of insulating snow covering the ice slowing down the growth of the ice. It probably won’t be safe for a couple of weeks yet. As a general rule of thumb, the ice doesn’t get safe at

No recent report on road conditions but this part of the county received a lot of moisture, so expect 4WD conditions. It is probably very muddy in the afternoons when it warms up. Expect ice conditions here to mirror those at South Fork.

Fishing is Good

by ELKO FLY SHOP
Jakes Creek is within six inches of spilling, is free of weeds and shore fishing is good for 9 to 14 inch trout. Surface water temps have are in the low 50’s and the water is fairly clear. The usual assortment of wooly buggers, hares ears, copper Johns and PT nymphs should all work. PowerBait, worms and small spinners should be used by

Ruby Lake NWR Fish Report

by ELKO FLY SHOP
Fishing is still fair to good for trout depending upon the day, the angler and where you are fishing along the collection ditch. The go-to fly seems to be the hares ear, with the pheasant tail nymph close behind. Also, wooly buggers and flies that have some red in them also seem to be working. For spin fishermen the usual assortment of small spinners

Good Fishing

by ELKO FLY SHOP
With the recent precipitation, the water level is up just a bit. But not enough to make much of a difference. However, anglers have been getting up to Wild Horse and catching fish averaging between three and five pounds. Most anglers are using worms or worms with marshmallows. One group fished from a boat, while the others were from shore.

Water is clearing

by ELKO FLY SHOP
While the water at Wilson is clearing, it is still off color, though fishing has picked up here. The stream below has flows that are fishable and one angler reported decent luck catching 14 to 15 inch fish below the falls. Shore anglers near the boat ramp were having good luck with worms and PowerBait for 12 to 15 inch fish. NDOW

Wildhorse Fish Report

by ELKO FLY SHOP
With warmer air temperatures, the surface water temps have climbed into the 50’s and reaching the mid 50’s by afternoon. There are still a few fish cruising the shorelines trying to spawn, but not many, and that should be winding down soon. Fishing continues to improve with the warmer temperatures as aquatic insects start to hatch and the fish metabolism increases. Sherbet PowerBait

NDOW Announces No Limit on Trout at Wildhorse

Low water levels caused by persistent drought conditions and irrigation demands at Wildhorse Reservoir have prompted the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) to remove the limit on trout, allowing anglers unlimited take. This emergency regulation is now in effect and will run through October 15, 2013. NDOW is concerned that with anticipated low reservoir water levels during the hot summer months the oxygen levels in

Jakes Creek Reservoir has been stocked and fishing should be good

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
This lake has been stocked and fishing should be good here. Water level is about a foot from spilling, so while it is a bit low, this small impoundment is in better shape than many. This is the time to fish Jakes Creek Reservoir from shore, as the weeds start to grow in late May and early June making fishing from shore difficult later in

Angel Lake Fish Report 01-30-2008

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
I'm just guessing, but most of the alpine lakes are icing up and while this one is a bit lower, it is in shadow during the warmest part of the day, which is the afternoon and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't starting to ice up. I haven't been able to find out if the road is closed yet, but if we get some
