This is normal for this time of year and just about perfect. The hoppers are starting to show here as well. Hopper dropper set-ups are the way to go as we get into the fall and lower water levels. As the water gets lower a more stealthy approach is also going to be necessary. Make sure you drift the edges and the shallows before marching

Knott Creek Reservoir Fishing Report

Knot Creek Reservoir is located 2 hours Northwest of Winnemucca Nevada and about a 4 hour drive from Reno. The lake is well known by the locals for having some outstanding trout fishing. The lake has plenty of water this year and the fishing has been good all season. Damsels, Callibaetis and midges are hatching in this high desert lake and fish are being caught

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

Last week has been slow but the bite turned back on Wednesday. Mickey Daniels had 10 mackinaw to four pounds, breaking a slow streak. Most were taken in 60 to 100 feet of water but some were as deep as 300 feet. Sting Kings worked best. (530) 546-4444; 530-412-1800

The catch-and-release section is fishing well during the day but the morning bite is best with nymphs and PMDs. Daytime hatches have been sporadic, but include PMDs, grasshoppers and ants and Little Yellow Sallies. (530) 587-4844

The river remains in great shape from Tahoe City to Reno. The water temps are starting to get a little warm in the afternoons so no matter what section you are fishing the mornings and evenings have been the best time to go. California - Flows coming out of Lake Tahoe are in the 300 cfs range. This is great news for the upper river. Once

The flows are dropping fast. On Tuesday morning they were 126 CFS. This is the time to go before the water gets really low. Hopper Dropper set-ups have been working well. You can use the same type of bugs as in the East Walker report. Mornings and evenings have been best. There has also been a Caddis and Little Yellow Stone hatch in the evenings

There have been caddis and little yellow stone hatches in the evening. The last half hour of light has been productive. Mornings have a sporadic emergence of PMDs. Use big stone patterns and small mayflies during the day.  (530) 587-4844

Pressure is light as the season transitions to skiing and boating from fishing. Water temperatures are in the 70s. There a few bass being caught and released. (775) 266-3550

The general section from town to Tahoe City is low. Look for deep holes and drift baby nightcrawlers, salmon eggs or small Panther Martins. Fishing is better in the the regulated sections to state line and big trout are being caught. Green Drakes are sporadic. Big golden stone flies and little yellow stones are effective during the day.  (530) 587-4844

The east side of the lake and the inlet kicked out some trout to those soaking nightcrawlers between jet skis and water skiers. (775) 266-3550

There’s a green drake hatch going on now. Use sizes 8 and 10 in the evening from the restricted area to the stateline. Shady spots are the best. Sunny spots have yellow stoneflies hatching. The water is in good shape and it gets higher as you move down the river but it’s very fishable. Water temperature is 48 to 50. The Little Truckee remains tough.

Fishing has been quiet during the week. Weekend anglers should expect skiers and recreational boaters. Those who have been out get a few trout. Bring bug repellent because the mosquitoes are everywhere. (775) 266-3550

Topaz Lake Fish Report

Trout fishing turned on for those still fishing on the east side of the lake near the mouth of the inlet. Nightcrawlers and Power Bait fished in 20 to 25 feet of water get rainbows to two and three pounds are being caught. The largemouth bass bite is just starting. The lake is full so there is no shore access. Boat rentals are available.  (775)

Mackinaw fishing is best on the north shore at early light in shallow water and then deeper as the day wears on. Most of fish are in the three to five pound range. (530) 546-4444; 530-412-1800

The river is dropping and clearing and is very fishable through town. The water is cold (46-48 degrees). There have been hatches of still march browns, otherwise it’s been best for nymphing. Spring bugs should appear any time now. Good numbers of large browns have been caught. (530) 587-4844
