Lake Mohave Fish Report

Smallmouth bass have provided the most action for anglers over the past week. The quality of fish has been impressive with most coming in at two to three pounds. Fishing has been slow across the area, though anglers have been able to get one or two from the dike on Haymeadow while using PowerBait. The shoreline along the dikes on Cold Springs and Adams-McGill are covered with floating weed debris that is making fishing difficult. The upper ends of the reservoirs are closed.

Anglers had a good time this past week with most taking home their share of rainbow trout. With the recent plant of 5,000 tiger trout fishermen caught their share of them as well. For bait fishermen, orange or rainbow PowerBait was the ticket while those throwing lures were doing well using ??-ounce Kastmasters in silver or gold.

Planter rainbows have been hitting well on PowerBait in the usual rainbow or orange coloration as well as night crawlers. It's still a little cool for crappie and largemouth bass action, but with rising water temperatures they should become active soon.

Fishing continues to improve along the river. Striped bass are showing more often, many averaging two pounds, but anglers are bringing in fish up to six pounds. Stripers and catfish are both taking anchovies. The Rotary Park area has been productive, as well as the area around Big Bend State Park.

Fishing on the Wayne E. Kirch WMA has been slow across the area. Anglers have had the most success at Haymeadow Reservoir using small spoons and PowerBait. NDOW planted about 5,000 rainbow trout in the reservoir the week of Feb. 9. Over the holiday weekend, anglers found good success catching both the stockers and holdover rainbows primarily with PowerBait. With unseasonably high air temperatures the water temps have slowly risen as well. As the shallows warm, anglers can expect a little more action as the fish turn on. Lorenzi Park has been fishing well for most anglers using small spinners or bait fishing with PowerBait. There have been no reports from the other ponds this past week. NDOW will continue to stock the ponds for the next few weeks, but trout stocking is temperature dependent and will stop once the water temps get too high to sustain the fish.
