Southern Nevada Fish Reports

Night crawlers and plastic baits have been working well for smallmouth bass. This bite will continue to improve as the fish move up in the shallows.  Look for bass hanging around artificial habitat structures. Double digit striped bass have been showing up south of Willow Beach with anglers having success using trout imitations.  

Trout action should pick up and continue to improve through April as the water and daytime temperatures rise. Think small when it comes to tackle selection and the size of your bait when fishing for trout. If practicing catch-and-release, it’s best to avoid treble hooks altogether. Single barbless hooks are best. The last trout plant of the season for most of the urban fishing ponds

Catfish are taking anchovies in the backs of coves. Stink baits, night crawlers and chicken livers will also catch the fish. Largemouth bass are still a little harder to come by, but fishing should pick up when water temperatures increase. Ghost shad crank baits are rumored to be taking a few fish hanging around drop-offs. With the up-and-down weather pattern, trout fishing has been hit-and-miss. Catfish are taking cut anchovies and night crawlers, but don’t overlook commercial stink baits. Poor weather conditions have disrupted the Nevada Department of Wildlife fish planting plans with trout slated to come from the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery. The agency hopes to plant fish from the Spring Creek Rearing Station at Hafen Park pond in Mesquite and at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Boulder City. Despite unsettled weather conditions, anglers are catching fish. Early risers are finding better success than those who head out later in the day. Striper anglers are finding good action with live shad. The Vegas Wash has been a productive area with anglers reporting success fishing at depths beyond 100 feet.   

High winds kept anglers off the water over the weekend, so reports have been few and far between. There is some talk of good fishing for largemouth bass in coves north of Cottonwood Cove. Anglers have been fishing vegetation along the shoreline.

Stocked rainbow trout will take worms, mini marshmallows, PowerBait and small spoons or spinners. If the bite is slow, don’t be afraid to try something new. Something as simple as combining a mini marshmallow with a worm can make the difference. The Nevada Department of Wildlife has plans to stock rainbow trout sometime this week at Floyd Lamb, Sunset and Veterans Memorial Parks. Hafen Park

Striped bass are hitting live shad, anchovies and lures. Anglers are finding good numbers of the baitfish in the Vegas Wash area. Angel, at Laker Plaza, reports that 6- to 8- inch swimbaits in white and chartreuse color variations also have been catching the stripers. The water is free of ice and starting to rise. Only a few anglers have been seen in recent days, but they are finding good fishing for rainbow trout with PowerBait in orange or green colorations. Spinners and spoons are good options for hardware anglers. The campgrounds and all facilities are open

Rainbow trout have been providing the best action on the river. Shoreline and boat anglers are both catching fish. The trout are biting on worms, PowerBait, and Mice Tails. The best fishing is being found from the dam downstream through Casino Row to just above the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. Largemouth bass have been active and are hitting on Rooster Tails.

Anglers are reeling stripers at both the north and south ends of the reservoir. Boat anglers have been most successful with anchovies fished off the bottom. Black bass are showing signs of life in the Cottonwood Cove area. Look for them and catfish in shoreline vegetation and along underwater shelves.  

Fishing was good over the weekend, but with the arrival of winds and cooler air temperatures the action has slowed. As water temperatures continue to warm in the coming weeks, black bass and catfish should become increasingly active.
