Tahoe sees a record brown

Although Lake Tahoe is known mainly for its large mackinaw [lake] trout caught in very deep water, the occasional oversize brown trout is fooled by skilled anglers. A new lake record for the species was caught this week, when angler Marvin Child nailed a 36-inch, 15 pound, 15 ounce brown while using a silver/black F11 Rapala Floater doused with Pautzke's Krill scent. Truckee River Fish Report

It’s up high but it’s fishable. The section from Trout Creek to Glenshire Bridge should be productive.Fish will be in close. Throw streamers, swing emergers or do indicator fishing. The section from Tahoe City  to Truckee is worth trying.   

Topaz Lake Fish Report

This lake has been open since January and fishing well when the wind isn’t whipping. Gusts reached 65 mph earlier in the week but calm is expected Saturday. The southwest side has been fishing best with a good number of trout from 1-1/2 to two pounds being caught on nightcrawlers.

Week 14 Topaz Derby 2011

This last week was excellent fishing at Topaz. The sun was shining and the fish were biting. We had anglers in everyday and a lot of them caught their limit. First place is Dusty McDonald of Topaz weighing 5.14 lbs and 23". Biggest fish so far this derby. Second place goes to Eva Bell of Yerington weighing in at 4.5

Traffic is light although spring like weather arrived. Snow is gone. Water temperature is 38 degrees but should rise into the low 40s later this week. (775) 266-3550

Topaz Lodge Derby Wk 13 2011

Biggest fish in week 13 weighed in at 4.8 and 21  ? " caught by John Hayes. Steve Nielsen won second prize with a 3.10 lb and 22". This last week brought in about 26 trout weighing at least 2lbs. Out of the 26 fish we only had 4 fish that weighed under 2.2 lbs. The trout are getting bigger.

Weather fluctuations have made fishing uneven. Weekend fishing was very good. A 13-pound trout won a weekend derby and a lot of 11 pound and 9 pounders also were landed. The nets are closed so most fishing is in the south end of the lake or near Pelican. (530) 541-8208; (775) 476-0400

Weekend fishing was good. Limits of trout to three pounds were taken. Trolling with Needlefish or Rapalas accounted for many of the fish. Nightcrawlers is the top bait. (775) 266-3550

This last week brought in 53 trout that weighed over 2 lbs. Average weight seems larger in at 2.12lbs. 1st place goes to Tim O'Brien of Gardnerville weighing in at 3.10 lbs and 21". Fishing is improving. Trollers are getting up to 50 fish per day. Bigger fish are offshore in deeper water. Biggest last week was 11.8 pound cutthroat. Beside the 11 pounder, three 10s and three nines also were weighed in. (530) 541-8208; (775) 476-0400
