The Big Fish Bite Continues

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
Sunny days are here and then sunny days are gone. If anyone has followed or researched fishing Pyramid Lake they knows that this time of year that wind + clouds at Pyramid Lake can make the fish party like it’s 1999. Butttt…….. Just like the conditions we had this week, with the days of bright skies, the fish still made indicators drop and abrupt stops

Plenty of good fishable river miles on the Truckee

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With the flows around average for this time of year and the water cold and clear, the fish are very keyed in on the “LBS” or Little Black Stuff, right now. This term includes Blue Wing Olives and Midges around a size 18-22.  Although it’s in the name, the flies certainly don’t have to be black. When we’re fishing midge larvae, we’ve been doing great on

Ice Update!

by SOUTH FORK STATE REC. AREA
Ice Update! Currently we are averaging 5 inches around the boat dock! However, there still is portions of the reservoir with open water. So please check the ice if you choose to go out on it. Also a reminder that entrance fees do apply this time of year so stop by the self pay station when you arrive! #nvstateparks #vistlincolncountynv #pioche #icefishing

State Park staff is reporting 5″ of ice in holes sampled near the boat launch

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
State Park staff is reporting 5″ of ice in holes sampled near the boat launch. Be advised, this is glare ice, and is extremely slippery. Anglers are reporting ice measuring up to 10″ in some of the coves of the Hendricks arm and Penrod arm. Ice thickness is variable across the reservoir and conditions can change daily. Always sample the ice for yourself and come

12.84 lb. Striper on the Colorado River

by RUSTY
With all this wind and cold weather, how about some river fishing? This time of year, our water levels are low, with some fluctuations, but mostly low releases from the Davis Dam. Our local angler, Bryan Werkmeister, was fishing from the shore at the Community Park area. He was using a swim bait and landed a nice striper weighing 12.84 pounds and measuring 32 inches. However,

Small craft warnings have kept most anglers and boaters on shore

by RUSTY
On Lake Mohave, small craft warnings have kept most anglers and boaters on shore, waiting for a break in the weather. The waves can get quite high and could swamp a boat if you're not careful. As a reminder, it's always a good practice to let someone know your plans and expected return time before heading out on the water—this applies even on calm days.

Ice Update: South Fork is almost entirely frozen over

by SOUTH FORK STATE REC. AREA
Ice Update: South Fork is almost entirely frozen over, with a relatively thin "skin" of ice, measuring 1-2 inches at its thickest points. At this time, the lake is NOT considered safe for ice fishing. There also does not appear to be any spots along the shore currently for open water fishing access. With forecasted highs above freezing, but cold temps at night, we will monitor the

Will it snow again?

by MATT KOLES
Will it snow again? Hopefully soon for the Truckee River watershed. Very cold at night, and warm afternoons. Flows are good and everything right now, but I get environmental anxiety. That's a real thing. For now, typical Winter stuff. Smaller stuff is you're nymphing. You can jig streamers on the euro rig, or fish the big stuff and strip. Usually the big stuff ain't so great in

It is a beautiful morning here on Wildhorse Reservoir and we have some great news!

by WILD HORSE STATE RECREATION AREA
It is a beautiful morning here on Wildhorse Reservoir and we have some great news! The area that had open water last week now has nice clear ice! Of the five holes we drilled at random, when entering from the boat ramp, all five holes were consistently 5 inches of the good clear ice! This means it is safe to walk on and you can

Fishing out here has been tough

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With the high-pressure days as of late, fishing out here has been tough. But there are still some good bite windows to be had. These are mostly in the early morning hours, at or just after sunup. This is a great time to really focus on either fishing midges under the indo or put in some serious time stripping. Stripping will be a particularly good

The river continues to fish well

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The river continues to fish well along most sections. The Glenshire area has continued to kick out some great dry fly fishing most days and they seem to be keyed in on midges primarily. Midge cluster patterns such as a Griffith’s Gnat have been productive as well as individual midge patterns like a para midge or fowler’s midge.  Further downstream, the name of the game would

OTW | Truckee River and Pyramid Lake | mid January 2025

by RENO FLY SHOP
Mike Anderson with your On-the-Water report from the Truckee River 1/16/2025. Small dark flies are your friend during the colder months. Some dry flies will happed on overcast calm days, that is also a good time to try a steamer in slow water. At the Pyramid Lake, indicator fishing has been best with most fish caught from 6-10 feet. Lighter colored balanced leeches have seemed

Ice is beginning to form on the open water areas

by WILD HORSE STATE RECREATION AREA
Ice is beginning to form on the open water areas! We are going to give it a few more days before trying to get measurements, but it has been getting thicker each night for the past few nights!

Ice thickness remains incredibly variable throughout the reservoir

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Ice thickness remains incredibly variable throughout the reservoir. Recent overnight lows dipping into the negatives have improved ice growth in some areas, while other areas still have a ways to go due to above average daytime temps. The shoreline near the boat ramp within Wild Horse State Recreation Area is just beginning to ice over and remains unsafe for access at this time. Anglers are

The reservoir is around 90 percent covered with thin ice

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The reservoir is ~90% covered with thin ice. Some open water remains along the shorelines of Jet Ski Beach and Coyote Cove as the day warms and skim ice melts off. These conditions are NOT safe for ice fishing. Shoreline anglers have been reeling in brown trout and rainbow trout, with brown trout catch rates having gone up significantly since the fall stockings. Spinning lures

South Fork Ice Update

by ELKO FLY SHOP
This week's fishing report said South Fork was wide open for shore fishing. The past few nights have frozen much of the lake and first thing this morning there was little to no shore fishing until late morning when some water opened up along Jet Ski Beach. With the forecast cold temperatures for this weekend, expect limited if any open water at South Fork. Maybe

The lake level is slowly rising at about 3-6 inches a week

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level  is slowly rising at about 3-6 inches a week. The Douglas County boat ramp is open and has only the middle dock in right now. Use a little patience and courtesy launching and coming back in. Shore angling was slow this last week. Most anglers were fishing the south end with powerbait or night crawlers. Trollers were using flashers and worms or
