Nevada Fish Reports

Spring Valley State Park has announced that the ice has begun to break apart and is not safe to fish on. There is some open water, but any fishing should be done from the shoreline. You can use a bobber with small jigs and mouse tails for bait.

The water level has been dropped to facilitate repairs on the dam and will be low until further notice. The shoreline is soft and muddy in many places. Fishing opportunities are very limited.

Rainbow trout have been the primary catch below Casino Row. Anglers fishing from boats and the shoreline are catching rainbows using PowerBait, night crawlers and spinners. The striper bite has been inconsistent though there is always the chance of catching a double-digit fish that is looking for a plump trout.

 Most striper catches are being reported from the north and south ends of the reservoir. Boaters have been successful using deep diving jerkbaits in shad and minnow patterns. Black bass action remains slow, likely due to the cooler mornings. Kayakers are catching rainbow trout with soft plastic worms in pearl and olive colors north and south of the Willow Beach marina. The river came up, a lot. This will make fishing here a bit tougher for the next few days, but certainly not impossible. If you are looking to fish the river right now, pick your location wisely. The long slow deep runs primarily found in the canyon will likely be your best shot at finding good holding water.  This is also an excellent time to fish

A series of storms have increased flows (link here) and decreased clarity on the Truckee River this past week. While flows haven’t been limiting the clarity have slowed down bugs and fish feedback. The flows have already dropped back to accessible levels and we anticipate the clarity to improve quickly. While it is transitioning back to clearer water we encourage all to try fishing worm

Water Conditions The Truckee River is currently offering good winter fishing conditions with the higher flows. Flows are 80 cubic feet per second in Tahoe City, through Truckee, it is flowing around 398 CFS and 740 CFS near Farad and the stateline. With the heavy rains, water is a bit high and dirty right now on the lower section of the California side. All and all,

Dam reconstruction is complete, and the lake is sitting at 50% capacity. Please note that shoreline access at Cave Lake is opened to the public, however recreational opportunities are limited. For more information on Cave Lake, please contact the NDOW Ely Field Office. As the water level rises, the public should not attempt to access the ice on the lake.

The water levels were recently lowered to repair the low-level outlet in November. The water has recovered nicely and there should be decent shoreline fishing along most of the reservoir. The reservoir was not stocked this fall due to the draw down.  Normal stocking efforts should resume in 2025.

Ice conditions have rapidly deteriorated at Comins Lake this past week.  Approximately 90% of Comins Lake has open water.  Anglers can shoreline fish the northern portion of the lake or even launch a boat (dock will go in later this spring) and troll for trout and northern pike.  Decent size trout have been seen shoaling along the shorelines of the north lake. Illipah Reservoir is sitting at approximately 40% ice covered.  Anglers can fish most of the western shoreline and can even launch a boat and access a good part of the rest of the lake.  All ice should be considered unsafe and will likely remain unsafe.  A total of 9,012 rainbow trout averaging 9.3 inches were stocked this fall.

Night crawlers and mealworms are catching stocked rainbow trout. The Nevada Department of Wildlife recently stocked trout in each of the community fishing ponds, Beatty and Hafen Park Ponds included. Anglers have reported catching a few catfish with night crawlers on warm afternoons. Although temperatures are beginning to warm up, the bluegill bite remains sluggish.

Striped bass are biting on anchovies and shad outside the Hemenway Marina and along the north coves of Boulder Basin. Anglers are finding the best action toward the end of the day along drop offs. In the Overton Arm, anglers are catching black bass and crappie with flatworms and jigs at the edges of coves.
