Ruby Lake NWR Updates

Water levels have started to drop, but are still allowing for easy launching at the main boat ramp and Narcisse ramp, although weeds are quickly increasing. Non-motorized boats and boats propelled by gas motors 10hp or less are permitted August 1-December 31. Fishing is good for bass, with 10-15 undersized per keeper. Unit 21 and the Brown Dike also continue to be good for bass.

As of 07/25/24 Wild Horse Reservoir remains under a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) watch. Fishing has slowed a bit with rising temperatures; however, anglers are still reporting good fishing for trout and bass. Anglers are also reporting marking large schools of yellow perch in the deeper water areas with flats near the channel.

As of 07/25/24 South Fork Reservoir remains under a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) watch. Vegetation growth is increasing with the high temperatures. Fishing for trout is fair, with anglers from boats in deeper water having the most luck. Fishing for bass is good, with most anglers targeting weedy points and coves. Catfish are also active, with anglers having some luck from shore using shrimp.

Cold Creek Reservoir is at 85% capacity. Anglers report Rainbow Trout and Tiger Trout being caught in the 10-12” range. A total of 1,002 Rainbow Trout averaging 9” were stocked this spring. Surface water temperatures have been holding steady at 68-70 degrees. Recent angler activity has produced Rainbow Trout in the 20” range, although fishing has been slow for trout due to warm water temperatures. Approximately 7,000 Rainbow Trout averaging 9” in length were stocked this spring. Nightcrawlers as well as spinner lures, woolly buggers, scud patterns, and midge patterns should continue to produce trout for anglers.
