9.5 lb. Rainbow at Wild Horse Reservoir

by DOUG BUSEY
November was a month to remember for Carson area resident Lew Souder, who had been sheep hunting. While fishing at Wild Horse Reservoir in northern Elko County, Souder wasn’t having any luck on the water. He decided to hunt instead and got himself a beautiful big horn sheep. After collecting his trophy, he went back to Wild Horse Reservoir (the same trip) where he landed

The cold nights have dropped the surface temps on the lake which has made for a bit more of a consistent bite this week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Even though we have not seen enough storms to really push the cutthroat in with any regularity, the cold nights have dropped the surface temps on the lake which has made for a bit more of a consistent bite this week. There are three main factors we look for when deciding good fishing conditions out here, and ideally, we would want at least two of

The water temps are plummeting, and the clarity is improving

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
While the flows have stayed much the same on the Truckee for a while now, the water temps are plummeting, and the clarity is improving. This is due to some very cold mornings this week. When we get into these types of winter conditions, there are quite a few important factors to consider for your best chances of success.   With the water being so clear along

Cave Lake has soe thin ice over portions of the lake

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Cave Lake is ~90% open water with a thin layer of ice over portions of the lake.  All ice should be considered unsafe.  There is good shoreline access from the day-use area of the Park.  There were 8,039 rainbow trout, averaging 9 inches, stocked this fall. Anglers should expect to catch hatchery stocked trout, however, there is a chance that you can catch a trout

Comins Lake is around 90 percent covered in ice with some area of the north lake still open

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Comins Lake is ~90% covered in ice with some area of the north lake still open.  Ice is variable in areas measured, with ice ranging from ½ inch to 3 inches in some places.  All ice should be considered unsafe until ice becomes thicker. by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Current Water Conditions Flows on the Truckee River have leveled out nicely this week—holding around 62 CFS out of Tahoe City, 92 CFS through town, and 400 CFS at Farad. With the upper river running lower, more trout are stacking up in the canyon stretch. The bite has slowed down a bit as winter approaches.

Decent mackinaw bite going on

by DOUG BUSEY
I checked in with Jason from Ruby Jean Charters today. He reports a decent Mackinaw bite. They were using live minnows behind blades — the fish weren’t hitting any of the lures. The mackinaw action picked up into midday as the sun warmed things up. They also caught a few browns and rainbows up in the shallows off the rocks. For more info or to book

The bite has been slow in the mornings but picks up as the sun gets higher

by DOUG BUSEY
The bite has been slow in the mornings but picks up as the sun gets higher. Trollers are using flashers and crawlers or various Rapalas. Shore anglers are having the best luck on the south end with salmon peach or chartreuse PowerBait. Inflated crawlers have also been working. Use caution early in the morning — there’s been a little ice on the lake and at the

It is windy and cold, and that means the ancient lake is fishing well

by THE FLY SHOP
It is windy and cold, and that means the ancient lake is fishing well. The Lahontans are eating Tui chubs for the time being. Good flies would be Zach's Pyramid Minnow in Tui chub and white. Balanced Leeches tied in lighter colors can work as well. From here on out you can fish the big midges and Balanced Leeches. This season is looking to be

Fishing below the dam is fair

Water temps have dropped into the 40s and water levels are increasing

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Water temps have dropped into the 40s and water levels are increasing. Shoreline weeds are still present but dying off. Better fishing opportunity will still be from float tube, kayak, etc. to reach the cooler and weed-free water. Trout are expected to measure up to 18″. Try small Panther Martins and Mepps, worms or your favorite PowerBait. Streamers and leeches are the go-to for fly

Water temps have dropped into the 40s and water levels remain low

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Water temps have dropped into the 40s and water levels remain low. Trout catch rates are fair to good. Try small, flashy spinners or PowerBait combined with small pieces of worm under a bobber. Bass and bluegill catch rates have dropped off with cooler weather.  The boat ramp is not open this year due to low water levels.

Water temperatures are dropping into the high 40s to low 50s

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

Bass fishing is done for the season. Special Regulations:  Artificial lures only in

Thin ice has formed in some coves

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Water temps have dipped into the low 40s. The boat dock has been removed from the water for the winter. Thin ice has formed in some coves, but is NOT safe for ice fishing, especially with warmer weather forecasted into the next week. Most of the reservoir remains open water. Trout fishing is good for fish between 16″ and 22″. Shoreline anglers are having luck

Water levels are down about 10 feet and the boat ramp is barely submerged

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Water levels are down about 10 feet and the boat ramp is barely submerged. It is unlikely anyone can launch a boat at this time. The shorelines are very muddy due to the receding water. Surface water temps have dropped into the 40s. The road is also in good condition, but may be muddy after recent precipitation. PowerBait and worms are always reliable, or try
