Fish Reports

Walleye fishing continues to be good with most walleye ranging 17-23”. Night crawlers under a boober or carp cut bait from shore.  Boats have been trolling rapalas or worm harnesses in close to shore.

Kinney pond has been stocked and has been fishing well with the warmer weather. Small slow moving spinners and jigs can be very productive during the early season. Fly fisherman slowly retrieving small woolly buggers are catching a few.

Knott Creek Reservoir opens to fishing this season on June 10th. NDOW crews were recently up at Knott Creek Reservoir checking access, water levels, and working on a fish survey. The reservoir is accessible from both the north and south roads. The south road going up Cove Creek is in better shape than the road from the north. Recent rains and snow melt have created

Onion opens June 10th. The road from the west side is open to access Onion Valley Reservoir. Recent rains have created gullies and ruts in some areas, so be careful when navigating these areas. Fishing is expected to be good with trout averaging 12-13 inches.

Cold Creek received its spring allotment of 2,050 rainbow trout averaging 8.5 inches and 1,517 tiger trout averaging 9 inches.  Anglers can expect to catch trout in the 8-to-10 inch range. The largemouth bass population at Cold Creek Reservoir is small and recovering from recent reservoir drawdowns. Fishing is slowly picking up but continues to be slow compared to most years. The water continues to be a tea-stained color due to the release of tannins from the rehydration of the vegetation surrounding the lake.  Surface water temperatures are in the low 60’s. Illipah Reservoir is near 90% capacity.  Water clarity has improved, and water temperatures are sitting between 58 and 60 degrees.  A total of 8,031 rainbow trout averaging 9 inches were stocked into the reservoir this spring.  Anglers can expect to catch rainbows in the 8-to-10-inch range.  A variety of  PowerBait, spinners and night crawlers should produce trout for anglers.

Roads to Spring Valley State Park have started to open. Water is still turning, so be patient getting a bite. The trout limit is 5 per day and possession. Bass are catch and release until June 30th.

Anglers have found good fishing for bass, trout and crappie. Chartreuse is usually the first color choice for success on this water. Plastics for bass and night crawlers or PowerBait for trout. Crappie have been caught while chasing bass and trout but are always fans of 3-inch jigs. The trout limit is 5.

The long holiday weekend brought a lot of recreational traffic into the area. Stripers nearing 10 pounds are taking anchovies near Big Bend State Recreation Area while crankbaits are fooling black bass along the river. Catfish are actively taking bait during the early morning or at night. Worms have been the trick for catfish in the shallows where the vegetation is thicker.

With increasing temperatures, fish and humans both are seeking respite in the shadows. Look for fish in pockets of shade throughout the morning hours. Anglers are still catching rainbow trout now and again, but reports are few. Bluegill and largemouth bass are going to be more common during warm months. This is the season for kayakers and striped bass at Willow Beach. Look for the fish in deeper water. Anchovies and shad imitations are taking the fish. Rainbow trout are rare finds but not impossible to catch. Anglers are seeing smallmouth bass in coves throughout the reservoir. Soft plastics in green and red are catching the fish.
