Big Bear Lake - Big Bear Lake, CA
Lake Information
Big Bear Lake, a 2,971-acre alpine reservoir in San Bernardino County, is one of Southern California’s premier cold-water fisheries. Its high elevation allows for consistent trout fishing from spring through fall, with frequent rainbow trout stockings by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and local hatchery programs. Trout are targeted with PowerBait, nightcrawlers, or small lures from shore, and trolled lures from boats remain highly effective in deeper waters.
The lake also supports healthy populations of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Largemouth bass are caught near weedy coves and submerged structure, particularly during spring and fall. Drop-shot rigs, jigs, and crankbaits are popular choices. Crappie and bluegill offer consistent action near brush and docks using jigs and live bait.
Catfish provide summer-night opportunities with cut bait or liver fished near the east end or Boulder Bay. Smallmouth bass, while less common, are occasionally caught along rocky areas.
Big Bear Lake offers ample public shoreline, multiple boat ramps, and marinas. Float tubing, kayaking, and pier fishing are also popular. A California fishing license is required for those 16 and older. The lake is patrolled by the Big Bear Municipal Water District and hosts annual fishing events. With trout longevity and diverse angling options, Big Bear Lake remains a top-tier mountain fishery.
