Fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass will start picking up in April as the water warms. Casting and retrieving spinnerbaits and plastics and suspending crankbaits, parallel to shore, can be an effective way to catch them. Smallmouth bass are mostly found near rocky areas, while both species may be found near points or brushy habitat. Fishing for crappie will pick up in early May as the fish move into shallow water to spawn. For crappie, try fishing a small 1/8-ounce jig tipped with a piece of worm under a bobber. In the spring, yellow perch and black bullhead can be caught in the shallows by fishing a worm on the bottom. The Port Ramp and Pineview Trail (Windsurfer Beach) are closed throughout 2026 for construction and site enhancements. To learn more about the closure and upcoming improvements, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
