Current Water Conditions

Flows on the Little Truckee between Stampede and Boca are have dropped a bit and are approximately 315 CFS right now. With the flows dropping, anglers can find conditions more favorable for wading. The best time to head out there is still early morning when water temperatures are more optimal for the fish.

Water Temperatures

Water temps are averaging in the low to mid 50s°F. Temperatures won’t change much for the rest of the season with this being a tailwater.

Hatches

Flows have decreased and with the warmer outside temperatures, anglers can expect to see some hatches of yellow sallies, caddie, and pale morning duns.

Effective Tactics

The trout are towards the end of their spawn period, but since the eggs take around 30 to 40 days to incubate, please watch for the redds while fishing. Anglers can have success with indicator nymphing, streamer fishing, or dry fly fishing to get bites. Fishing subsurface in the deeper pools with nymphs like Zebra Midges, San Juan Worms, Glowbugs, or Sculpzillas is producing the most bites. It’s also a great time to fish the Upper Little Truckee River off Highway 89 North above Stampede. With the campground there, the state tends to stock this area for campers.

Catch Report

Fish are spread throughout the system with the higher than usual water levels, but the bite is good fishing subsurface. Both rainbows and browns.
